Progression Requires Inclusion
A mural painted on a long brick wall in a residential area. It is monochrome (black and white) and very sharply designed. The mural is divided into three sections:
Left side:
It reads:
"1st EAST ANTRIM U.V.F. CARRICKFERGUS"
There are two crests – one is the UVF (Ulster Volunteer Force) emblem, and the other seems to be a clover symbol with a "C" in the centre.
Middle section:
A striking graphic dominates this part – two sets of eyes staring out, partly obscured by what looks like balaclavas (masks associated with paramilitary groups). Between them is an image of a hand holding a pistol, with the barrel pointing towards the right.
Right side:
The text reads:
"PROGRESSION REQUIRES INCLUSION"
– a somewhat surprising message considering the more traditional militaristic imagery on the left and centre.
The scene is quite grey and wet, with a rainy sky and wet pavement in front of the wall. The houses behind are red brick terraces and a pebbledash house with a satellite dish.
This mural is associated with loyalist paramilitary imagery from Northern Ireland, particularly the UVF, but the message about "progression" and "inclusion" suggests some kind of effort (or at least rhetoric) toward moving forward.
